University Records Finding Aids
This page consists of links to published finding aids to a variety of processed university collections. These collections are primarily president's office records, but Vice Presidents' offices, Deans' offices and organizations are also represented. To assist the researcher finding aids to collections that are not university records, but that relate to Eastern are also listed below. Finding aids are arranged in alphabetical order by collection title, and all the finding aids can be searched from the library search engine found at the top of this page.

Alpha Rho Tau Papers [PDF], 1935-1950, Small Collections

Alpha Rho Tau was founded as the Eastern Kentucky University Art Club in 1935. In 1939 the name changed to Alpha Rho Tau, Greek letters for the word 'art'. These records consist mainly of meeting minutes.

Anderson, Leslie Papers [PDF], 1905-1981, 09/05/03, 41/02/03-Oversize Box 3

Leslie Anderson kept many documents relating to his time as a student at Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and his early teaching career. He has photographs from these times that cannot be found anywhere else. These, along with his compositions and the scrapbooks he compiled, paint a vivid picture of what it was like to be a student at Eastern and a teacher in Kentucky in the early part of the 20th century. Later documents shed light on the earliest alumni reunions organized by graduates of Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and also offer insight into the later lives of these early graduates.

Ashby, Jennie Jeffers Papers [PDF], 1901-1970, 09/05/03

The Jennie Jeffers Ashby papers are an interesting collection for researchers in the area of education, especially in Muhlenberg and Ohio counties. Mrs. Ashby writes about the schools where she taught and kept photographs from many of those schools. As an alumni of Kentucky State Normal School - Eastern Division (now Eastern Kentucky University) she also writes about faculty and events while she was there. Strong points of the collection are the school photographs that she collected from various schools where she taught and her personal report cards showing curriculum throughout her school career.

Eastern Kentucky University Publications and Reports [PDF], 1907-2004, 15/04/03-16/06/13
This artificial collection is made up of university publications and reports. All publications are considered permanent records and a copy should be sent to the University Archives. The publications portion of this collection include The Milestone; university, college and departmental newsletters; the Eastern Progress; policy and procedures manuals; telephone directories; and many other types of publications. The holdings for each item are listed at the end of the title. When possible title changes are noted, so that publications can be tracked easily. There are many gaps in these publications which will be filled in as they become available.

The reports portion of this collection include College and Department Annual Reports, Financial Statements, Accreditation Reports, Planning Reports, Institutional Research Reports and various other reports generated by the university. There are some gaps where reports have not been archived at this time. As these reports are added to the archives, this inventory will be updated.

Eastern Kentucky University Small Collections [PDF], 1907-2004, 15/04/03-16/06/13

These are collections that consist of a very few items or a single document, and which have been filed together for ease of access. The entry below is the only inventory or descriptive information for the entire collection unless the entry does not contain descriptive information, just a collection name and date range. Where the entry is only a collection name and date range (such as "Alpha Rho Tau Papers, 1935-1950"), a separate finding aid exists that can be accessed by clicking on the collection name.

Eastern Kentucky University Women's Gymnastics [PDF], 1915-2004, 09/05/04, 41/02/03-Oversize Box 2

This collection offers a good overall picture of the Women's Gymnastics Program at EKU during its short history. It includes photographs, news clippings, schedules, rosters and correspondence for every year of the program's existence. Program objectives, rules and routine requirements, statistics and even poetry written by and in honor of the gymnasts can also be found in this collection. Anyone interested in women's athletics at Eastern will find this collection useful.

Gold Star Men [PDF], 1942-1946, EKU Small Collections

This collection is a set of three photo albums labeled "Gold Star Men of Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College" compiled to honor Eastern men who were killed in World War II. It included a photograph of each soldier and a card with information about his rank, hometown, attendance at Eastern and death. One volume was "Graduates and Faculty"; the other volumes were "Former Students Who Did Not Graduate".

Kenney, Agnes Chandler [PDF], 1920s, EKU Small Collections
Agnes Chandler Kenney taught in six one-room schools in Boone County, KY from 1918 until 1928, when she married William Roy Kenney of Walton, KY. She attended Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College during the summer. Mrs. Kenney was from Rising Sun, IN and she rode the train from Aurora, IN to Cincinnati, OH where she transferred to a southbound train to Richmond, KY.

McBrayer, Paul Papers [PDF], 1940-2001, 50/04/01, 41/02/01, 41/02/07
This collection contains material related to Paul McBrayer's career as head basketball coach of Eastern Kentucky State College and years after, ca. 1940-2001. The majority of the collection contains individual folders of players that corresponded with McBrayer relating to basketball, EKU, or personal information from over the decades. The collection also contains a variety of pictures of individual players, teams, and former players' families. Concerning McBrayer, there are newspaper articles, pictures, awards, correspondence, and memorabilia from him or relating to him.

Olmsted Collection [PDF], 1908-1927, 1959, EKU Small Collections
This is an artificial collection composed of copies of correspondence between Eastern Kentucky University representatives and the Olmsted Associates of Brookline, Massachusetts regarding future building and landscaping plans for Eastern. The original records are housed at the Library of Congress and at the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site which is part of the National Park Service.

Shawhan, Josephine Photographs, [PDF], 1916-1920, Small Collections

The Josephine Shawhan Photographs consist mostly of photographs taken when Josephine was a student at EKSNS. Most of the photos are of friends, but there are also a number of photos of classes or class excursions she attended as a student. Several photos are from her husband Everett Pfanstiel and were taken at Transylvania University. There are also photos from a trip to Chicago around the same time period.

Walters Collegiate Institute Records, [PDF], 1901-1990, 50/04/05

Walters Collegiate Institute was and is a corporation founded for the support of �higher education� in Richmond, Kentucky. The Institute was a small school for boys, sponsored by the Presbyterian Church. In 1906 the Trustees of Walters were pleased to turn over their Institute and most of their property to the newly created State Normal, and the Model High School, as part of the Normal, continued the work of Walters Collegiate Institute. This collection consists of records from Walters Collegiate Institute including Articles of Incorporation from 1901-1965, checking statements, correspondence, financial statements, envelopes and notes from the bank used by the school and books and pamphlets.
